Home Opener Day & Newest Honouree
Submitted By keshkawkogan on Sunday, October 22, 2017
"Welcome to todays Manitoulin Panthers Home Opener Day." Guest Announcer Given Cortes states to the large crowd at the NEMI recreation centre.

To continue a tradition that began last season, and to kick start the 2017-2018 season. The Manitoulin Panthers were pleased to have all Panther teams playing their Nickel District Minor Hockey League home opener games today.

First off, the Manitoulin Panthers welcomed the Sudbury Lady Wolves Atom B team who played the youngest Panthers, the Elliot Lake Atom A Wildcats, the Nickel City Peewee A Outlaws, and the Nickel City Bantam A Phantoms.  Although the Association went 1 and 3 in the games, with the Atom team pulling out the sole win with a score of 7-2.

The Novice continued to make some great progress against a team made up mostly of players 2 years their senior. The Peewee faced some solid goaltending and couldn't quite get on the board early in the first after outshooting their opponent significantly. To wrap up the day, the Bantam had a intense game against an old rival but came up a little short.

Also, as part of the tradition that began last season at the inaugural “Home Opener Day”, the Manitoulin Panthers continued their Honouree program by honouring one of the hardest working volunteers on Manitoulin.

Our honouree has literally dedicated decades to the game to make hockey happen for the many players who have enjoyed over 30 years of Panther hockey. To start the 2017-2018, the Manitoulin Panthers were proud to honour Marjorie Moody. Marj joins previous honourees Rick Gjos, Wes Leeson, and Mr. Larry Leblanc.

As is typical Marj style, when she was asked to attend today to be honoured, she told members of the Executive Council that they don’t have to do that.   Many may not know, but Marj was instrumental in establishing the Association over 30 years ago and is still involved today as the current Secretary for the Executive Committee.

Marj gives tirelessly to many causes and many know her from her golf tournament, her time with the Manitoulin Islanders, and of course the time she puts in with the Manitoulin Panthers. All past, current, and future players can be thankful of the great work by excellent volunteers like our previous honourees and Marj. Without hardworking volunteers, we would not be here today. Manitoulin Panthers President, and Atom Head Coach, Kevin Eshkawkogan presented Marj with a small token of appreciation on behalf of the Association and a few gifts from the Atom Team.

Thank you for all the years of service Marj!!!
